Description

Enjoy this easy recipe for classic French Onion Soup. It’s a comforting and flavorful dish perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients

  • 6 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 4 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Caramelize onions: Melt butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes, or until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized.
  2. Add liquids and simmer: Stir in beef broth, red wine, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Prepare bread: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place baguette slices on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
  4. Assemble and broil: Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with toasted baguette slices and shredded Gruyere cheese.
  5. Broil: Place bowls under broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade beef broth.
  • Adjust the amount of red wine to your preference.
  • Make sure to watch the soup carefully under the broiler to prevent burning.
