Description

These Crockpot French Onion Meatballs are a simple and delicious appetizer or main course. Enjoy the classic flavors of French onion soup in meatball form.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed French onion soup
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 bay leaf
  • French bread or rolls, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into 1-inch meatballs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs on all sides.
  3. Transfer meatballs to a crockpot.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  5. Pour French onion soup and beef broth over the meatballs in the crockpot. Add bay leaf. Cook on low for 4-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours. Serve meatballs on French bread or rolls.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and ground pork.
  • You can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the crockpot for extra depth of flavor.
  • Serve with shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese for a truly authentic French onion experience.
