Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef (90% lean preferred)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 2 cups water or beef broth
- 2 cups medium pasta shells, uncooked
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the Aromatics: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
- Add Pasta and Sauce: Stir in the marinara sauce, water (or broth), and uncooked pasta shells. Mix well to combine.
- Simmer: Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer uncovered for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Make It Creamy: Lower heat and stir in heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. Cook for 2–3 minutes until sauce is smooth and creamy.
- Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.
Notes
For a lighter version, use half-and-half instead of heavy cream and ground turkey instead of beef. Add vegetables like spinach or mushrooms for extra nutrition.
